Kangaroos

Kangaroos are large animals that you can see in zoos.
Kangaroos are not mammals, they are marsupials.
A joey is a baby kangaroo. It lives in its mother's pouch. Kangaroos are often hunted by dingoes so the kangaroo drops the joey because it is too heavy. She comes back for him later.
A mob is a group of kangaroos. If the male wants to be leader he has to fight.

the wreck of the delaware

Long ago Huria woke to the sound of storm. She heard wind and rain lashing at the roof. Suddenly she heard a crash! Quickly she looked out the window. What did she see? A sinking boat. She got her husband Hemi and her friend Hohepata. They ran from the pa and onto the beach. Some other men built a fire. A man on the boat called to them in maori.
The sailors on the boat threw their rope into the sea. Huria and her friend plunged into the sea. They swam, got the rope, hauled it ashore and tied it to some rocks. He called to the men on the boat to come on the rope to shore. One of the sailors started to go along the rope. The ship tilted back and forth. When it pointed towards the shore, the sailor was ducked under the water and when it pointed away from the beach the sailor was hoisted in the air. Huria could see he wasn’t going to make it so she dived into the water and saved him. That happened every time.
When it was the captain’s turn, he looked at Henry and decided he was dead so he started to go along the rope. When he was halfway through, the rope snapped. Luckily Huria saved him then the boat smashed. He and the sailors were all saved apart from Henry. The rescuers were all given gold and silver watches and are still remembered today.
